A Canoncito, New Mexico father said his daughter was born in the front seat of a truck traveling down a closed highway in a snowstorm. Russell LeFevre said his wife Elizabeth started having contractions early Tuesday so they grabbed their 3-year-old daughter and jumped into a truck driven by his brother and headed toward Santa Fe. They were on the icy highway and about halfway there when Elizabeth's water broke. The baby immediately followed. Russell, who graduated from nursing school last month, delivered Joanna Mallory LeFevre in the front seat of the vehicle. The family found a state police officer parked on the highway who gave them blankets, called an ambulance, and took them the rest of the way to the hospital. Mom and baby are doing fine.

Police say a drunken New York man struck a deer with his vehicle, then tried driving the injured animal to a nearby hospital — for humans.
Police say 29-year-old Andrew Caswell hit the deer early Monday in the suburban Rochester town of Greece. They say Caswell and three companions argued over what to do with it before Caswell decided the deer needed to go to the hospital.
An officer who pulled the car over discovered the deer was in the vehicle’s trunk and had died.
Police say Caswell’s blood-alcohol level was .16, twice the legal limit. Caswell’s phone number couldn’t be located Thursday.
Police Chief Todd Baxter tells the Democrat and Chronicle that while trying to save the deer was commendable, “driving while intoxicated will not be tolerated.”

The owner of a Waycross, Georgia, McDonald's said an anonymous man came into his store, bought $500 worth of gift cards and told the manager to use them for the needy. Brian Fey, who owns the fast food franchise, said he took the cards the anonymous man donated and gave them to the Sweetwater Baptist Church homeless shelter in Waycross and the Pierce County Food Pantry in Blackshear. Fey said the man's generosity inspired him to match the donation and give an equal number of cards to each of the organizations.

Police in Salisbury, North Carolina, said a man celebrated his 45th birthday by stuffing nearly $300 worth of food down his pants at a local grocery store. Investigators said Ronald Broadway, 45, was arrested Thursday in the parking lot of a Food Lion store after an employee spotted him shoving the food, including steaks, baby back ribs, smoked turkey and shrimp, into his pants.

A granny in England recently had a writing pen removed from her stomach after being there for over 25 years and doctors were amazed to find it still writes. You know, because that's the first thing doctors do after pulling something out of somebody: see if it still works. Apparently the woman was using the pen to push down her tongue while checking out tonsils back in 1986. She stumbled while stretching to look in the mirror, and managed to swallow the pen in the process. The pen didn't cause any discomfort, so eventually she simply forgot about it.

A South Carolina man has died after eating cocaine that was hidden in his brothers butt. They two men were in police custody when one brother attempted to destroy the cocaine that was playing hide-and-go-seek in his brothers naughty place. The butt cocaine consumer later died from digesting the drug.

An Indian woman who stands just over 2 feet tall has been named world's shortest living woman by the Guinness Book Of World Records. Jyoti Amge, who is 24.7 inches tall, accepted the title Friday while celebrating her 18th birthday in her hometown of Nagpur. Guinness confirmed Amge measured 7 centimeters shorter than the previous record-holder, Bridgette Jordan of the United States. Amge has a form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia and is not expected to grow further.

A Florida woman says she was at a movie with a friend when he excused himself to go get something from her car, only to drive off in it. Pasco County deputies said 27-year-old Michael Pratt is facing charges of grand theft. Pratt allegedly told the woman in the theater he needed to get something out of the car, so she gave him the keys. He never returned. The woman finally got in contact with Pratt four days later. The woman said Pratt laughed and told her he dumped her car. After deputies found the car, they arrested Pratt Wednesday, charging him with grand theft auto.

A cable TV repairman got quite a surprise when he walked into the basement of a New Jersey home. There was a 500-pound bear sound asleep on the floor. The bear had been spotted wandering in the neighborhood in Hopatcong earlier Wednesday. It's not clear how it got into the home. The bear strolled out of the house before state Fish and Game officials arrived. Officials fired a tranquilizer dart at the animal, which walked a few blocks before it passed out. Officials plan to relocate the bear. No one was injured.

Authorities in Florida arrested a woman accused of attacking her ex-boyfriend with the antlers of a mounted deer head. Terry Nowakowski told police that he and his ex-girlfriend, Chelsea still live together for financial reasons and for the good of their 3-year-old daughter. The woman apparently became angry Tuesday when he went outside to call his current girlfriend. Nowakowski said Harrison locked him out of the home and punched him in the face when he attempted to reenter she then began striking him in the face and body with the ends of the antlers. She was charged with domestic battery and ordered held without bail.

A Baltimore man said he found success with his business, delivering Christmas trees with pulled pork sandwiches while dressed as Santa Claus. Jason Toraldo came up with the idea for Pork N' Pine when he was unable to secure a location for a tree lot. He charges $45 for the service, which includes chopping down the tree and delivering it via bicycle while dressed as Santa Claus with two friends in elf garb assisting. He plays Christmas music from a boom box during the deliveries and performs a few dance moves while handing over a white pine and pulled pork sandwich.

A Nebraska school said supervision is being beefed up after a 5-year-old wandered from an after-school program and walked more than a mile to his mother's job. Alicia Pursey of Nebraska City said her son Peyton was supposed to be at Hayward Elementary School Monday when he showed up at her place of business. He apparently walked off the bus Monday without going inside the school and walked more than a mile across multiple busy streets. The District Superintendent said supervision is being increased to prevent further incidents.

Miami Police said an investigation has been opened into how a police officer managed to drive his cruiser into a vertical position on a light pole. Police said the officer, who was not injured, wound up with his vehicle in a vertical position alongside the light pole yesterday morning and the car was tangled in wires attached to the pole. Resident Donovan French said he was able to take some pictures before the cruiser was removed. "I have to let the world know a police car has went up on the pole on my block," he said.

A secret Santa has helped out three Michigan Kmart customers by picking up their layaway tabs. "This lady came up randomly and said, 'Can I, you know, pay off some people's layaway?'" the Kmart employee who dealt with the unidentified customer said. The woman randomly picked and paid for three layaway tickets out of the approximately 800 on the store's books. Her only requirement was that the orders included some toys. In the end, she paid a total of around $500, leaving a balance of $10 on each of the three tickets. "The only note left behind by the mystery shopper was a message on the receipt reading, "Happy Holiday from a friend."

Several Florida grandmothers shed their clothing for a calendar being sold to raise money for a new kitchen at their local American Legion Post. The Lake Helen women, ages 44-87, said the bake sales they held to raise remodeling money for the American Legion Post 127 kitchen failed to raise more than a few hundred dollars, so they took a suggestion from Lake Helen City Observer newsletter editor Pat Chadwick and bared some skin for the calendar with an aim of raising thousands. So far nothing has been raised, in fact a few things that we're raised, are now flacid...

An alleged armed robber in Chicago picked the wrong victim, getting into a tussle that left him wounded, bruised and in cuffs. Anthony Miranda, 24, faces charges including discharging a weapon during a robbery, after allegedly approaching a 33-year-old man sitting in a car and asking for a light before pulling a gun and demanding his valuables. The victim complied and the gunman ordered him out of the car. That's when the driver grabbed for the gun and during the ensuring struggle, Miranda shot himself in the ankle. The victim, who held his assailant until police arrived, told officers he is a mixed-martial arts competitor. Miranda, who was on parole for a burglary conviction, was jailed in lieu of $350,000 bail.

A Michigan woman may not have expected that new-car smell when she bought a used vehicle, but says she certainly didn't expect the odor of a dead body. In a lawsuit filed in Oakland County Circuit Court, Margarita Salais of New Baltimore alleges the dealership's staff sold her a 2006 Ford Expedition last March without telling her it once held a dead body. "They bought the car while it was still cold out in March," her attorney said. "The warmer it got, the worse the smell got." Salais said when she brought the car back to the dealership someone told her the smell came from a dead animal. She said she filed a claim with her insurance company, whose investigators determined odor was of human origin. The insurance company later learned the car had been stolen three times, something Salais said the dealer also failed to tell her. Her efforts to return the car were fruitless and now she wants $25,000 plus court fees.

Police in Palm City, Florida, said a man arrested for brawling with his son informed officers on the habits of rednecks. Police said that on November 20th Mark Thomas Wach got drunk in his yard and begin shooting his lawnmower. One of the bullets hit his 18-year-old son's porch. Wach then begin shouting and complained that his son's mother wasn't paying child support. When the son managed to wrestle the gun away, Wach returned with a 12 gauge shotgun and started pointing it at his son. The son once again managed to wrestle the weapon away and called police. Police had to use a tazer on Wach three times to calm him down. Wach didn't understand what the hubbub was all about, explaining to officers that "fighting is what redneck people do." He was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic assault with a firearm and domestic battery.

San Diego Chargers kicker Nick Novak had an embarrassing moment during a game against the Denver Broncos when footage of him urinating was aired on TV. CBS cut to footage of Novak on the sidelines during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game, which was tied 13-13 at the time, to accompany a conversation about the kicker between booth announcers Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts. However, instead of seeing the kicker preparing for the possibility of a field goal attempt, viewers were treated to the spectacle of Novak relieving himself next to the team's bench while someone held a towel to give the kicker a small amount of privacy. Novak later missed a 53-yard field goal and the Broncos took the game by 3 points.

An Ohio barber whose customers are cutting back on haircuts is trying to boost business by letting people trim prices to what they can afford. Gregory Burnett has put a sign in the front yard of his Canton shop that reads "Times are hard" and "Pay what you can pay for a cut." Burnett has accepted as little as $5 for haircuts that are normally priced at $12. Burnett says his name-your-price deal helps both him and the community.

Authorities in Florida say a woman threatened to blow up planes when police refused to help her with her husband's work schedule. Lee County Port Authority Police said Soraya Evette Billinge, 36, called from her cellphone and told the dispatcher she was upset about her husband working nights because she doesn't like being home alone. Billinge, who said her husband works for Delta Airlines at the airport, became upset when the dispatcher told her police could not help with her problem. "OK I blow up, I blow up 10 planes," she allegedly said before hanging up the phone. Billinge was arrested and is facing felony charges. The airport is remaining mum, only saying that her husband does not work for the TSA nor the port authority.

A Colorado woman discovered her stolen bike for sale online, met the seller for a test ride and two-wheeled it home. Boulder police said an 18-year-old man was arrested on investigation of theft. The woman had reported her black Trek 1.2 bicycle stolen Saturday but discovered it for sale on Craigslist not long afterward. She met with the seller, asked for a test ride, rode it to her vehicle where she stashed it away and drove off, police said. The owner then called authorities, who arrested the seller.

A South Dakota concrete company is suing a woman who allegedly rode her bike on 195 feet of a wet concrete sidewalk. Big-O-Concrete, which poured the sidewalk September 2nd along Pebble Beach Road in Mitchell, said Diana Reiner ignored orange traffic cones and warnings from bystanders when she left a trail on the walk, forcing the company to tear up and replace the concrete. The company is accusing Reiner of negligent property damage and intentional property damage. The lawsuit is seeking $5,736.25 to cover the cost of replacing the sidewalk as well as unspecified punitive damages and court costs.

A 50-year old Croatian man has been arrested after seeking medical help to remove a live 11-cm anti-aircraft shell from his butt after getting it stuck up there during a sex game.

Some pervert in England was recently arrested after being caught in the women's room of a mall dressed as a female 'mannequin' and taking pictures of women's feet under the stall wall and recording the sounds of them farting and flushing because that's what turns him on.

A man and woman charged with stealing a police car left running outside a Florida convenience store apparently wanted it for a quickie sexual encounter. Alexander Pratt, and Clara Pearson, were charged with grand theft auto. They allegedly grabbed a Honda Civic that was being used by plainclothes detectives from the auto theft division. They were pulled over and arrested not far away. Pratt told officers he was not sorry for his actions because he was eager to "have intimate relations with Pearson."

An overzealous cleaner accidentally destroyed a piece of art worth more than $1 million when she removed what she thought was a "stain" from the installation. Martin Kippenberger's "When it Starts Dripping from the Ceiling" remains in place at the Ostwall museum in Dortmund, Germany, despite the damage sustained earlier this month when a cleaner scrubbed away the painted puddle beneath a rubber trough placed under a stacked tower of wooden slats. The work by Kippenberger, a German-born artist who died in 1997, was on loan to the museum from a private collector who agreed that it should remain on display despite the incident. In the meantime, insurance adjusters are assessing the damage. It has not yet been decided whether the patina would be restored, or if the artwork would be left in its newly "cleaned" condition.

Police in Ohio were able to track down a man who took a $499 Apple iPad from a Walmart because he left his debit card at the store. Investigators said the clerk at Walmart stepped away to seek help from a supervisor after several unsuccessful attempts to scan the Streetsboro man's debit card to pay for the iPad on October 30th. The suspect ran off with the device, leaving the card behind. Police used the card to track down the man, who was recorded taking the iPad by the store's security camera. He was arrested and charged with theft.

30-year old Rickie La-Touche suffocated his wife with a pillow after she destroyed the Star Wars toy collection he'd been collecting since childhood. He's been sentenced to life. He told a court that his wife Pornpilai Srisroy, 28, had damaged his precious Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker memorabilia. He later suffocated her during a fight and then ran sobbing to his mother who lived nearby. La-Touche later told police his wife had smashed up his Star Wars collection as part of a campaign to "make his life hell". He also claimed he "flipped" when she threatened to leave him to go back to Thailand.

Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman and did not have his female reproductive organs surgically removed when he legally became a man in 2002, He has told doctors" he will not be having any more children. Beatie, who gave birth to children Susan, Austin and Jensen after his wife Nancy was found to be infertile, said he had to go off his male hormones during each pregnancy and a hysterectomy will help stabilize him as a male.

Current employees of a Swedish lingerie chain said their union is planning to sue over name tags listing their bust circumference and cup size. The workers at the stores said they are required to list the information on their name tags and wear them at all times while working. "We have dirty old men coming into the shop looking at my cup size. Why should everyone get to know that? CEO Susann Haglund said listing the employees' sizes was an idea from workers and was optional.

A police officer is suing a delicatessen and its cook, who admitted stuffing body hair into the officer's bagel sandwich in revenge for a traffic arrest. The lawsuit filed by officer Jeremy Merck of the Evesham, New Jersey, Police Department seeks unspecified damages from Good Foods to Go in Marlton, New Jersey, and its cook, Ryan Burke, for an incident that occurred in February 2010. Merck ordered an egg, cheese and turkey bagel and after eating part of it, he found it "was adulterated with pubic, chest or other human hair." Burke, who served Merck the sandwich, was charged with aggravated assault, retaliation against a public servant and food tampering. He ultimately served 15 days in jail.

A woman who won $25,000 worth of plastic surgery from an Atlantic City casino has decided she won't go under the knife. The Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort gave the winner of its Nip and Tuck Sweepstakes the option to take the prize in cash. And that's exactly what Saturday night's winner did. A casino spokesman says the woman opted not to make her name public. The contest gave the winner the opportunity to mix and match various types of surgery, including breast enhancements, tummy tucks, liposuction and face lifts until the total hits $25,000.

Two managers at a Lake City, Florida, Domino's Pizza restaurant were charged with arson after allegedly torching a Papa John's Pizza location, police said. Lake City police arrested Domino's manager Sean Everett Davidson for the fire. The second manager, Bryan Sullivan was arrested Friday after being questioned by police. Police say the two men confessed to the crime and their motive was that their Domino's location would receive more business if the Papa John's Pizza restaurant was put out of business.

A Pennsylvania man is accused of stealing a sandwich and then hopping on a stolen forklift to make his getaway. Police say Sean Faulkner walked into a Pub yesterday, ordered a Reuben sandwich, and then ran out without paying. He jumped on the forklift from a construction site. Faulker was still in the forklift in the parking lot when officers arrived. His escape was reportedly thwarted because he could not put the forklift in reverse.

A man Toronto found a 3-foot-long python coiled up inside his toilet bowl. He called authorities after discovering the snake Tuesday night. Two police officers removed the python and turned it over to the city's animal services department.

Police in Colorado Springs say when a man's girlfriend unexpectedly came home just before another woman was due to visit he called police to report his new gal pal as a burglar. Police say Kevin Gaylor, 24, invited a woman he had met via Craigslist to his home just after 3 a.m. so they could "get better acquainted." When Gaylor's girlfriend came home unexpectedly, the two-timer called police to report the other woman as a "burglary in progress." Gaylor was cited on suspicion of false reporting to authorities.

Emergency responders in California said a man spent nine hours trapped in a child's swing at a public park after accepting a bet from friends. Police responded Saturday morning to a report of a man screaming at a park around 6 a.m. They found a 21-year-old man with his legs stuck in the leg holes of a swing designed for a small child. The man told police he had used laundry detergent to lube up his legs and squeeze into the swing at 9 p.m. the previous night after accepting a $100 bet from friends.

A woman who was traveling to Ireland said a Transportation Security Administration card in her luggage told her to "GET YOUR FREAK ON." Jill Filipovic, said she found the TSA card, which is frequently left in the luggage of passengers after their checked bags have been searched. "Just unpacked my suitcase and found this note from TSA," Filipovic tweeted. "Guess they discovered a 'personal item' in my bag. Wow." Filipovic described the "personal item" as "the most basic lady-thing you can imagine." Filipovic wrote the note was "total violation of privacy, wildly inappropriate and clearly not OK, but I also just died laughing in my hotel room." She said she plans to file a complaint with the TSA when she returns to the United States.

For the second time this month, authorities have charged a father with allowing his 9-year-old child to be a designated driver. Nathan Sikkenga, 31, or Gillette, Wy. told troopers Saturday that he and his wife "were under the influence of alcohol" and instructed their son to drive the van, according to an arrest report released Tuesday. The van crashed into a security gate arm bar. Sikkenga was charged with felony child endangerment.

A Pennsylvania couple is facing an assortment of criminal charges for having sex on a city bus, carnal activity that was captured by the vehicle’s surveillance camera. According to a police criminal complaint, Amanda Confer, 24, boarded the bus on a Friday afternoon in August. She was “accompanied by her infant daughter,” a detective reported. Also riding the bus through Montoursville that day were “Pre-release inmates” part of a work release program that allows inmates to come and go from the county jail at specified times.

Investigators allege that they sat next to each other in the rear of the bus. In short order, Confer and Peterson (pictured in the above mug shots) moved from hugging and kissing to oral sex (which was provided by Confer). “After a couple of minutes of oral sex,” Detective Alberto Diaz reported, Confer “lowered her underwear” and, “upon sitting on” Peterson’s lap, “both defendants proceeded to have sexual intercourse for several minutes.”

An emergency operator in Clarksville, Tennessee, knew she was dealing with an unusual situation when she answered a recent call. Three-year-old Bailey Rafferty called 911 and told operator Rebecca Blackstop that "mommy fell down the stairs." Blackstop keep little Bailey on the line until help arrived. Medics found Heide Rafferty unconscious, while Bailey was still holding the phone. Mom was taken to a hospital and later released.

A Florida woman who added her brother to her cellphone plan said the two weeks he spent in Canada resulted in a monster phone bill. Celina Aarons said she added her brother, Shamir, a college student who is deaf and mute, to her T-Mobile phone plan recently and she received a bill last month for $201,000. Aarons said she found Shamir had not turned his data roaming off during his two-week vacation in Canada, causing him to incur fines of $10 per megabyte while sending and receiving more than 2,000 texts as well as using the Internet and watching videos on his phone. T-Mobile agreed to drop the bill to $2,500 and give Aarons six months to pay it. The company said Shamir was informed via text message of the fees for data roaming, but his sister said he must not have noticed them.

A bag stolen at gunpoint from the owner of a California check-cashing business would have yielded the thief no more than the victim's lunch, police say. The incident occurred Friday morning at the Fontana Cash Now, when the 35-year-old owner was allegedly approached from behind by a gunman demanding a bag the businessman was carrying. Police said the victim gladly relinquished the bag, which contained only his lunch.

At age 100, Fauja Singh has run into the record books. He finished a Toronto marathon last week. He's now the oldest runner to complete a full-distance marathon - 26.2 miles - and earns a Guinness record. It took Singh more than eight hours to cross the finish line, six hours after the winner. While the crowd was long gone, family, friends and supporters greeted Singh as he finished the race.

When Apple released its new iOS5 operating systems to go with its iPhone 4S, it touted a new app called "Find My Friends" as a great way to track and meet up with friends. According to MacRumors.com, a man from New York City said he is "Divorcing wife. Thanks iPhone 4S and Find My Friends." The man apparently found his wife had told him she was going to be with friends but was actually with a guy. The man closed his post with "thankfully, she's the rich one."

Several Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park visitors participated in a cockroach eating contest to win 2012 season passes to the park. Participants were offered live Madagascar hissing cockroaches with a choice of flavors such as Mexican and barbecue. Anyone who ate a cockroach within two minutes Saturday evening won a 2012 season pass to the park. The event was part of the park's Halloween-inspired Fright Fest that runs through October.

A trooper stopped to help with a flat and ended up making a bust. Maryland State Police say an officer saw a pickup with a flat tire on an I-95 exit ramp. The trooper became suspicious after talking with two men changing the tire. According to officials, the trooper received their permission to search the truck and found nearly 70 pounds of pot. Police say the load is worth more than $300,000. The two Florida men now face a number of drug charges.

Authorities in North Carolina arrested a woman whose wrong-number text about a drug deal was received by a sheriff's deputy. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office said Deputy P.V. Alkire received a text message Thursday night from a number he didn't recognize from a sender who identified herself as "Amy" and asked if he wanted "business tonight." The sender said she was selling "bones," a street term for Xanax, and Alkire arranged to purchase 10 of the pills at a truck stop. Amy Leigh Brown, 35, was arrested and charged with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance. Investigators said Brown was carrying 25 generic Xanax pills.

Police in New Mexico arrested a woman accused of posting a Craigslist ad saying she was looking to purchase marijuana. Roswell Police said Anamicka Dave, 29, put a posting on the website explaining she was new to the area and looking to purchase marijuana. A shocked Sgt. Amber Miller accomplished two monumental feats last weekend. Days from her due date, the 27-year-old joined 45,000 other runners to participate in Sunday's Bank of America Chicago Marathon and then gave birth to a baby girl named June hours later. Miller, an avid runner, said she signed up for the 26.2-mile race before finding out she was pregnant. She said she never expected to finish the race, but she did. Miller and her husband started the run and just kept on going. They ran part of the race and walked the second half as her contractions started. It took them 6.5 hours to finish. At 7 pounds, 13 ounces, baby June entered the world just hours after mom and dad crossed the finish line.

Authorities figure the bridge bandits will try to sell it for scrap.

Police in Yuma, Arizona, have arrested a man they say robbed a bank and then spent some of the money on beer and pizza at a nearby restaurant. Police accuse 56-year-old Henry Elmer of robbing a local Wells Fargo Bank with a box-cutter knife Saturday and leaving with cash. Elmer then ordered a beer and a couple slices of pizza at a nearby restaurant. He was arrested before he got his food. The restaurant returned the $20 Elmer had used to pay for his order.

A 17-year-old from southwestern Illinois could be paying Walmart for the rest of his life, following a fire he set in the company's Wood River store last year.
Dustin Walls pleaded guilty Monday to starting a fire in the 24-hour Walmart in September 2010. Surveillance cameras reportedly caught Walls setting shelving units on fire in the cosmetic's section around 2:50 a.m. Several bottles of shampoo ignited and cans of hairspray blew up. The store was closed for days as a crew worked to fix damage to the building.
Walmart claims the fire cost $400,000 in repair fees and that more than $500,000 worth of merchandise was ruined when the store's sprinkler system kicked in to stop the flames. Yesterday, a Madison County judge approved an order for Walls to pay Walmart $983,614.58 in restitution.

A grocery store worker accused of handing out a semen-tainted yogurt sample at an Albuquerque market pleaded guilty Thursday. Under terms of his plea agreement, Anthony Garcia admitted he tainted a sample of the yogurt he was handing out at Sunflower Market in January. He also admitted putting some of his semen on a plastic spoon that he placed with the yogurt.Garcia then approached a female customer and offered her a sample."The criminal conduct to which Anthony Garcia pleaded guilty today is completely outrageous," U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Police say a 37-year-old drunk man stole an ambulance from a Chicago hospital before crashing it and needing assistance from another ambulance. Paramedics were putting an unoccupied stretcher into an empty ambulance at Norwegian-American Hospital when the man got in and took off. He crashed the ambulance a mile-and-a-half away, hitting several vehicles along the way. The man suffered minor injuries and was transported back to Norwegian-American Hospital in another ambulance. Charges are pending.

The search went on for several hours before a police dog discovered the girl sleeping in her bed. Police said the girl must have been moving through her house during the search, playing a hide and seek type game with the searchers."

A man accused of trying to kill his lover's husband in Maryland, was foiled when the fake beard he was wearing started to come off. Frank Cipriani is charged with attempted murder. Cipriani was allegedly having an affair with a married colleague. Prosecutors say he had developed an elaborate plan to get rid of the woman's husband, going to great lengths to obtain his fingerprints and typing a fake suicide note to make the death look like a suicide. Prosecutors say the plot was foiled when Cipriani's fake beard fell off and the husband escaped.

Chris Walton has been working on her fingernails for 18 years. And it's finally paying off. Guinness World Records has named Walton the woman with the longest fingernails. Nicknamed "The Dutchess," the Las Vegas woman helped kick-off the new 2012 edition of the Guinness World Records book. Her nails measure 10-feet 2-inches on her left hand, and 9-feet 7-inches on her right hand. The previous record holder for longest nails was Lee Redmond, of Salt Lake City. Her nails measured a total 28 feet in 2008. Redmond lost her nails in a car crash the following year.

Officials in a Minnesota town have shelved plans to change the name of Stoner Avenue, despite having about 15 of the street's signs stolen each year. The Bemidji City Council put plans to change the name of the street on hold after residents complained it would force them to update their driver's licenses and other documents, including bank records. Council members said they will instead seek options for making the signs less prone to theft. City officials said about 10 of the signs currently need to be replaced. Theft of the signs has cost the city about $20,000 during the past decade. The avenue was named for 19th century area surveyor Marcus Stoner.

The Belmont Park racetrack in New York state said the first three winners on the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks bore the numbers 9, 1 and 1. A Jacksonville, Florida, woman says her neighbor is behind a harassment campaign that has resulted in 150 pounds of unsolicited mail arriving at her home. Dana Kraus said the unwanted items, include about 70 magazine subscriptions which left her on the hook for about $1,000. Kraus believes her neighbor, Randall Green, is behind the campaign. Kraus obtained an injunction against Green after authorities discovered he had ordered materials from a hair restoration company in her name.

A photographer visiting New York's Bronx Zoo found an escaped kudu antelope in a pedestrian area. Andrew Lichtenstein was visiting the zoo Sunday when he stumbled upon the animal, one of two male kudus obtained by the zoo, in a walking area. "I just turned the corner and there was a kudu," Lichtenstein said. "It's a large animal." Lichtenstein said he tried calling the zoo to inform officials, but the number went straight to voicemail. He said a food stand worker was able to contact zookeepers. The photographer said officials arrived and opened the gate to the exhibit, allowing the kudu to walk back into the enclosure on its own.

Jason Schneider, 26, known as Jason the Joke Guy to park-goers, said he first decided to spend the day telling $1 jokes with a money-back laughter guarantee in April, and he made $140 during his first 6 hours. Schneider, who said he failed to find steady work after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, said he takes his humorous profession seriously. A Burger King official says a tattered U.S. flag outside one of the fast-food chain's Ohio restaurants will be replaced after an angry Vietnam veteran took it down. John Henderson, 63, was so upset by the deteriorated condition of the huge flag at the Burger King in Perkins Township that he was unable to finish his burger. He went outside, brought the flag down and took it to a local Veterans of Foreign Wars hall for retirement. Henderson said a Burger King employee reclaimed the flag from the VFW hall and mentioned the possibility of filing charges. However, Elizabeth Hanson, a training supervisor with Burger King, arranged to meet with Henderson face-to-face Sunday and promised him the flag would be replaced. Hanson said Henderson will be invited to the flag-raising ceremony once a new flag is obtained.

Detroit police conducting a gun buyback event gave out cash for 739 guns, but one guy got nothing for a pair of grenades he brought in. The Detroit Police Department said the Tuesday event at Second Ebenezer Church collected 339 rifles, 376 handguns, 24 assault rifles and two grenades, which were promptly detonated by authorities. Sgt. Eren Stephens said the man was paid for some guns he brought in, "but we don't buy grenades." Stephens said the event was so successful that event partner Continental Management used up the $20,000 it brought for the exchanges.

A 22-year-old Alaska woman said she punched a black bear in the face to save her small dog from being turned into bear chow. Juneau resident Brooke Collins hit the bear Sunday night to save her dachshund, Fudge. She discovered the bear crouched down, clutching Fudge in its paws and biting the back of his neck. "It had her kind of like when they eat salmon," Collins said. "I was freaking out. I was screaming at it. My dog was screaming. I ran up to it ... I just punched it right in the snout and it let go." Collins said her boyfriend then scared the bear away. "I think it was more startled than anything," she said. The dog was not seriously hurt in the attack, but Collins said she's tending to the animal's wounds and keeping her inside for now.

A Miami International Airport passenger is in trouble after being caught with snakes in his pants while trying to board a flight. The Transportation Security Administration said the seven cold-blooded reptiles were discovered on the male passenger by security scanners on August 25th. It was not clear where in the man's pants the snakes were hidden or if the snakes were venomous. The unidentified passenger didn't stop at sneaking snakes on a plane. He also had three tortoises hidden in a nylon bag concealed in his pants. The exotic animals were confiscated by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife and the man was arrested for trafficking illegal wildlife.

A central Pennsylvania man has been charged for a second time with trying to steal a rack of ribs by shoving them down his trousers. Carlisle police said 65-year-old Donald Noone tried to hide about $20 worth of ribs in his pants on Sunday. Police say he attempted to pull the same stunt on May 22nd at a supermarket and pleaded guilty to retail theft and public drunkenness. Police say that since this is a second offense, the theft charge will be considered a more serious second-degree misdemeanor.

A woman fishing near her home on Lake Ida in Minnesota said she reeled in a prosthetic leg three years after it was lost by a swimmer. Beth Krohn said she phoned several area businesses in hopes of tracking down the leg's owner and she lucked out when she called Advanced O and P in Alexandria. Pam Riley, who also has a house on Lake Ida, said she lost the leg while swimming three years ago. Krohn met with Riley in a Walmart parking lot to give her the leg. She said she is proud of her catch.

Police say they're trying to determine what caused a septic tanker truck to crash off a western New York road and slam through the wall of a home before coming to rest in the living room. Police say the truck was carrying 200 gallons of fresh water, some of which spilled out, and a separate load of 300 gallons of waste product, which didn't leak. The home was declared uninhabitable after the crash.

Idaho state environment officials say crews have finished removing massive rolls of toilet paper that fell off a truck and were lodged for weeks in the upper Lochsa River. Earlier attempts to pull out the paper was called off when it began disintegrating, creating an even bigger mess. Officials said teams yanked out the remnants last weekend when lower river flows made the work more manageable. Crews wrapped the rolls with a reinforced mesh before they were pulled out by a tow truck. The rolls landed in the water after the truck hauling the load along U.S. Highway 12 slid into the river.

Police in Menasha, Wisconsin, are hoping someone will come forward with information about a prosthetic leg discovered in a neighborhood. The leg was turned over to an officer by a woman who discovered it between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on August 4th. "The leg is a prosthetic leg with a black shoe on the bottom of the leg," police said. Officer Aaron Zemlock added the leg has been in the police evidence room for nearly two weeks and no one has come forward to claim it yet.

Police said Timothy Raines, 43, stole the forklift from a construction site Sunday and led police on a chase ending on Interstate 30. Raines was arrested on charges including theft, aggravated assault on a peace officer and driving while intoxicated.

Canadian police say they're considering charges against a Quebec man who dropped a 20-ton boulder in his ex-wife's driveway as a birthday present. Isabelle Prevost made the discovery Sunday morning in the town of Acton Vale. The massive rock was spray-painted in French with a happy birthday greeting on one side and "This is for all you're doing to me" on the other side. Her ex-husband, Dany Lariviere, who owns an excavation company, told police he used a front-end loader in the middle of the night to transport the boulder because his ex-wife had always complained he never gave her "a big rock."

The owners of the Aqueduct Race Track, New York City's first casino, said the grand opening has been delayed due to pigeon poop in the building. An alleged would-be robber ended up at the wrong end of a gun when he tried to rob a wrestling coach. Fred Kemp, 63, and his wife had just finished dinner when Richard Nowling stuck a gun in Fred Kemp's face. Kemp, who is 5-foot-7-inches and weighs 150 pounds, instinctively pushed the gun away and then he put the would be robberin a "sleeper hold". Nowling was charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. Kemp coaches wrestling for the New York State Junior Olympic team and is a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at American University in Washington, D.C.

A 14 year old boy killed his great-grandmother and stabbed his grandmother after being told to stop playing video games. The boy snapped after being told to turn off the game, a stand off ensued with police which included him firing a pellet gun at officers while waving his sword at them. Police say Gordon Flavia got into his Jeep and drove backwards into his neighbor's carport, knocking down a roof support beam and coming to rest in a bathroom. Flavia fled the scene on foot, hid in a portable toile where he covered himself with a bucket of human waste, "because he thought the dogs were coming, and he was trying to throw off the scent,". An Iowa woman woke up to find a drunken teenager in her bed. Carla Kraninger initially thought it was her son. But she quickly realized it was not and called police. She and her son tried to wake up the trespasser, but the teen was too intoxicated to respond. The high school student told police he had a beer with some friends earlier and they dropped him off at what he believed to be his mother's house. The teen, who had a blood-alcohol content of 0.115 at the time.

Police say a home repairman working in Illinois, stole a diamond ring, then swallowed it to keep the owner from getting it back. Wilfredo Gonzalez was doing remodeling work in the alleged victim's home last Friday when he asked to use the bathroom. When he finished, the homeowner noticed her diamond ring was missing and told her husband. Gonzalez denied the theft and began struggling with the husband. During the struggle, Gonzalez allegedly took the ring from his pocket and swallowed it. Police took Gonzalez to a nearby hospital, where the ring showed up in an X-ray of his stomach. The ring was recovered and had to be washed, several times.

A Long Island school bus driver said he was fired for giving a ride to a pair of police officers whose car had flooded during a hailstorm. George Daw was driving a mini-bus carrying a teenage passenger on August 1st as golf ball-size hail and torrential rain came down in New Hyde Park. He encountered a stalled unmarked police cruiser on Hillside Avenue that was carrying the detectives and was beginning to fill with water. They told Daw, "You've got to help us. You've got to get us to the third precinct. We're police officers." Daw moved the teen to the back of his vehicle and let the detectives on board. "I felt this was something anyone would do under the circumstances," Daw said. "I felt they were in danger." Educational Bus Transport of Copiague terminated Daw, saying he violated policy prohibiting drivers from picking up unscheduled passengers.

Police in Arizona are urging residents to practice handgun safety after a man shot himself in the you-know-what while putting a gun in the waistband of his pants. Chandler police said Joshua Seto, 27, shot himself Tuesday night while walking to Fry's Food Store with his fiance. He was attempting to secure her pink handgun in his waistband. The bullet also struck Seto in the left thigh. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. It was unclear whether Seto suffered any permanent damage from the incident.

The owner of two Dallas businesses that officials say were falsely represented as religious outreach efforts has agreed to close them. A judge closed the Playground last month. The city, in a court filing, said undercover officers determined that it was a swingers sex club, operating in a space that had a certificate of occupancy for a church, synagogue or mosque. The owner also agreed to close another club called Darkside. The city says the businesses violated zoning restrictions and had no religious activity.

Police in Jacksonville, Florida, say a potential Twinkie thief was thwarted by an armed store clerk last Thursday. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to a call from a convenience store around 4 p.m. when a man attempted to steal a Twinkie. The store clerk chased the suspected snack cake snatcher out of the store. Police say the clerk's gun discharged during the chase, hitting the suspect. K-9 units followed a trail of blood but did not locate the suspect. A check of area hospitals turned up 18-year-old Joseph Williams, who admitted to being in a struggle with the store clerk. He was arrested. No word on the condition of the Twinkie.

A pregnant suburban Chicago woman was so determined to finish the Illinois bar exam that she completed the test even after going into labor. 29-year-old Elana Dawson started the final portion of the exam last week when she went into labor. The exam must be finished to be valid. She says her goal was "to get through the exam as fast as I could and leave". Her contractions were about 15 minutes apart. After finishing, she walked one block to a hospital. Little baby Wilson was born two hours later. She'll find out if she passed the bar in October.

Drug suspect Jose Jimilian hit the wrong car with his bicycle. Jose ran into an unmarked police car filled with undercover cops. Suspicious officers found cash, three bags of pot and four bags of cocaine on Jimilian. He's pleaded not guilty to a number of charges, including drug possession with intent to distribute.

Police say an 8-year-old boy was driving a pickup down a Louisiana interstate while his drunken father slept in the passenger seat. The man's 4-year-old daughter was in the back seat when the truck was stopped Saturday morning in Livingston Parish, troopers said. The child's driving was so erratic that it alarmed motorists, who called authorities. The father, Billy Joe Madden, 28, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was booked on charges of child desertion and allowing a minor to drive. The children were turned over to Child Protective Services.

Pittsburgh police said a wanted man who allegedly attempted to carjack a plainclothes detective told officers he was working on the latest Batman movie. Police said Micah Calamosca, 21, who had been wanted on an assault charge, attempted to carjack Detective Robert DiGiacomo, who was in an unmarked car. Calamosca was taken into custody with the help of an off-duty officer from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Police said Calamosca claimed the carjacking attempt was part of filming for "The Dark Knight Rises," which began filming Friday in Pittsburgh. Calamosca was charged with felony robbery of a motor vehicle and jailed lieu of $5,000 bond.

The shooter and a friend of Cardella's have both been sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service. A charge against Cardella was dismissed. The ex-girlfriend never did visit Cardella in the hospital. The prosecutor said this is "the most phenomenally stupid" case he's seen.

A Pennsylvania man was jailed on charges of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest after police say he passed out drunk while cooking, causing a small fire that forced the evacuation of his public housing apartment building. Avery McCall was arrested about 3 a.m. Tuesday at his apartment in the Solomon Homes public housing complex in Johnstown. Firefighters had to use a pass key to enter the smoky apartment, where they found McCall on the couch as food burned on his stove. Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Two goldfish have survived 134 days since a devastating earthquake hit New Zealand without any pet food or electricity to power their tank filter. The goldfish, named Shaggy and Daphne after characters in the TV show "Scooby Doo," were in a 26-gallon tank in the reception area at Quantum Chartered Accountants in Christchurch when the earthquake struck, killing 181 people. Experts say bacteria may have kept the water clean enough to sustain life and the fish may have eaten algae growing in the tank. They may also have gleaned some nutrition from other sources - six fish were originally in the tank; two were found alive, one was found dead, and there was no trace of the other three.

A former Texas jail guard faces up to 20 years in prison for smuggling tacos packed with hacksaw blades to an inmate facing murder charges. Alfred Casas, 31, was found guilty in a Bexar County courtroom this week of two counts of bribery and one count of providing an implement for escape. Prosecutors said Casas smuggled the two loaded tacos into the jail in exchange for two bottles of Xanax provided by the girlfriend of the inmate, Jacob Keller. Casas said he thought the tacos were packed with chorizo and eggs, not blades, when he gave them to Keller in 2009. The hacksaw blade, along with a length of rope and an inmate jumpsuit dyed to resemble street clothes, was found in the inmate's cell during a surprise inspection.

A Charlotte, North Carolina, family has come up big in the lottery - three times. Kimberly McCauley won $100,000 this month playing a new instant-scratch off game called "10X the Money." St. Louis County Sheriff's officials found the fire truck in the city of Cook. The 25-year-old driver was arrested on charges of theft of a motor vehicle and driving while impaired.

An unsteady forklift dropped a container full of fine Australian wine worth more than $1 million, smashing most of the bottles. The winemaker says he's "gut-wrenched, shocked and numb" after the loss of his flagship vino. Sparky Marquis of Mollydooker Wines lost a third of his Velvet Glove Shiraz production after the accident that destroyed all but one of the 462 cases bound for the United States. Each bottle of the Mollydooker wine sells for $200. Marquis said that when workers opened up the dropped container, "it was like a murder scene. There was red everywhere."

A man crashed his van into six cars at a New Hampshire car dealership because the dealer refused to take his "lemon" vehicle back. David Cross of Salisbury, Massachusetts, was charged with six felony counts of criminal mischief. He said his wife purchased the van Monday and soon discovered the vehicle had major problems including a broken odometer. The dealer refused to refund his money and told him he was "stuck with it." Cross said he took the van back to the dealership just before midnight Monday and drove it into six cars. "I hit the first $25,000 car I could see," Cross said. "I didn't hit a car under $20,000. He was arrested and released on his own recognizance. The public is rallying around Cross. Fans have designed a T-shirt at cafepress.com in Cross' honor, suggesting the proceeds should go to a defense fund. Michael Rivers won an expensive moral victory. He spent two years and $450 to fight a $25 parking ticket. A judge in Springfield, Massachusetts, has dismissed the ticket Rivers received in October 2009. He was cited for parking too long at a meter. Rivers contended he had put plenty of change in the meter but the meter was broken. Rivers, who handled the case himself, said fighting the ticket was like doing your own dentistry.

Georgia residents called 911 for help Tuesday morning and landed up in jail. Deputies responded to a call on a home invasion and were greeted by tow men who said they could hear people in their back bedroom. A quick check of the residence found no intruders. The men then pointed outside and told deputies the "suspects" were climbing into a boat and getting away. That's when the officers realized the two men were hallucinating. "They were so high they called 911 on themselves," a police spokesman said. Investigators who later arrived discovered a meth lab at the residence.The two men were arrested, and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.

A man in Jackson, Tennessee, told police an exploding Hot Pocket caused a motel room fire. But investigators say Christopher Stanly Fondren was cooking meth in the room, not microwaving a snack. Firefighters called police after finding evidence of a meth lab in a melted trash can. Police locked down several rooms to make sure there were no toxic chemicals left over from making the illegal drug. Officers arrested Fondren and are looking for a second suspect.

Idaho authorities say a mother and daughter were arrested for drunken driving within an hour of each other - the mother when she went to pick up her daughter's dog. Police stopped 28-year-old Alisha Gardner at 10:56 p.m. Saturday in Idaho Falls after spotting her car swerving and crossing the centerline. Her blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Within an hour, 51-year-old Diana Gardner drove out to her daughter's car in order to retrieve a dog. When she arrived the same officer smelled alcohol on her and had her go through a test as well. Diana Gardner's blood-alcohol level came back at twice the legal limit as well, netting her a jail cell along with her daughter. No word on what happened to the dog.

A probation officer didn't have to look far to find a Kentucky man in violation of his probation. Prosecutors say Scott W. Roby posted pictures of himself drinking on his Facebook page - after he had invited his probation officer to be his friend on Facebook. Roby's probation has been revoked. He's been sentenced to two years in prison, in part for violating conditions that required him to stay alcohol-free. He had been convicted on drug charges.

A Washington business was victim of phone hackers, leaving it with a $90,000 bill. Reliance Mortgage owner Hank Lo's average phone bill comes to about $1,000 a month. But his most recent bill from his long-distance provider was for almost $90,000, full of international calls to North Korea and South Africa. Hackers had targeted the mortgage company's switchboard, so when the international calls were placed, Lo would be billed for them. The phone company has offered to take about $47,000 off of the bill, leaving Reliance responsible for the remaining $41,000!

If the owner can't be found, the donkey will be sold at auction.

The races for mayor and three commission seats are wide open in the small North Carolina town of Tar Heel because no one bothered to run. Current Mayor Ricky Martin says he's not surprised no one wants the jobs. Even in a town of 117 it's hard work with little compensation. A Florida woman is suing her bank, claiming it's ruining her credit rating by refusing to recognize that she is not dead. Wrenella Pierre said she obtained two mortgages from JPMorgan Chase Bank after building her Oviedo home in 2007, and her family received a letter of condolence from the bank for her "death" in November. Pierre said the bank also notified credit-reporting agencies of her death. She said the bank failed to correct the mistake despite her repeated requests. "I don't know why the bank made this type of disastrous mistake," said William Pierce Howard, Pierre's attorney. "There is no possible way to have credit extended when you're deceased." Chase spokeswoman Nancy Norris said the bank is investigating how the error was made.

An Arizona sheriff known for his crime raids in the Phoenix area says he called off his plan to have jail chain gangs pick up trash outside Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he wanted the focus to be on the children and the national pastime instead of his chain gang. The sheriff had planned to have three chain gangs decked out in striped jail garb posted around Chase Field during last night's game. One was to be made up entirely of undocumented immigrants convicted of drunken driving. Arpaio regularly uses his chain gangs to draw publicity for his tough-on-crime message. Authorities in Lehigh Acres, Florida, said a fleeing suspect was chased down and apprehended by a deputy driving a borrowed golf cart. Deputy Richard Williamson responded to a report of domestic battery Tuesday and the suspect, Jeremiah Ellarius Haynes, fled on foot. Williamson chased the suspect to a nearby gated community, where a resident at the gate loaned the deputy a golf cart. Williamson caught up to Haynes and used his Taser to stun the man when he attempted to flee again. Haynes, who had led the deputy on a 1.8 mile chase, was taken to jail on charges of battery and resisting an officer without violence.

A Lecanto, Florida, woman said her collection of 619 flamingo-related items has earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Sherry Knight said she has been collecting flamingo paraphernalia for years and recently received the news that she is a Guinness World Record holder. Knight, who works for a Path Thrift Store associated with a rescue shelter, said she is hoping to use her fame from the record to draw attention to the issue of homelessness.

Police in West Hartford, Connecticut, said a motorist pulled over for not wearing his seat belt was arrested after drugs concealed in his butt fell out of his clothes. Dillon Livingston, 26, was pulled over while allegedly driving without his seat belt Thursday night and the bags of heroin and cocaine fell from his clothes while he was being questioned, police said. Livingston, who was charged with failure to wear a seat belt and illegal possession, was released on $2,500 bail. He'll be back in court on court July 14th.

A 79-year-old Texas woman who went back to school on the advice of her great-grandson has earned her GED certificate after three years of study and hard work. Tomasa Herrera of Fort Worth said the road to her high school equivalency certificate was full of obstacles during the past three years, including eye surgery, appendicitis, a broken leg and paralysis from the waist down. "Math was the hardest part for me; I failed it three times," she said. Herrera said she was inspired to get her degree while struggling to help her great-grandson with his homework.

A Michigan jail inmate says he's being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment because he can't have pornography in his cell. In a handwritten lawsuit, 21-year-old Kyle Richards claims his civil rights are being violated at the Macomb County Jail. Richards says denying his request for erotic material subjects him to a "poor standard of living" and "sexual and sensory deprivation." The Michigan Department of Corrections admits that prisons allow some pornographic material, though it's banned at their jail. The American Civil Liberties Union says prisons have a lot of leeway. Richards was charged with bank robbery after police followed a trail of snowy footprints and dropped money to his apartment from a bank robbery scene in January.

A woman has been arrested for to smuggle her husband out of jail in a suitcase. Quintana Roo Police in Mexico say the woman had been there for a conjugal visit, and when she was leaving, staff at the prison in Chetumal noticed that she was pulling a black bulky suitcase on wheels. When they asked to inspect the suitcase of 19-year-old Maria del Mar Arjona, they found her partner, Juan Ramirez Tijerina curled up inside. She was charged and arrested for the stunt.

The lawyer for a Kentucky drunk driving suspect accused of stealing a police cruiser during his arrest blamed his client's actions on the influence of alcohol. Heritage Creek police said Theodore Bickel was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser June 19th when he managed to remove his seat belt, move his cuffed hands to his front, make his way to the front seat of the car and speed off in the vehicle. Bickel, 25, crashed the car a few miles away and it flipped over a guardrail onto the roof. He fled the scene and was arrested the following day. Bickel's attorney said his client was "very sorry that this happened and apologizes for his conduct." He said Bickel even apologized to the officer while stealing the vehicle.

Members of a Texas high school's Quidditch club, dedicated to the sport from the "Harry Potter" novels, said they want official recognition. The Keller High School Quidditch club, which boasts 80 members and four teams, is lobbying the University Interscholastic League to have Quidditch designated as an official high school sport. A Boynton, Florida, man is nursing burns after his roommate and landlord doused him in alcohol and set him on fire. Jonathan Steinberg, 58, faces two counts of aggravated battery. Police say Steinberg and Ronald Rohde were arguing over rent money on Monday. Another roommate said that at one point Steinberg threw alcohol on Rohde's torso and lap. During a scuffle, Steinberg grabbed a screwdriver and cut Rohde's lower back. That's when Rohde realized his boxer shorts were on fire. He was treated for minor burns at a hospital. Steinberg was charged with aggravated battery.

Police say a New York man arrested for burglary was tracked through DNA left on a carton of orange juice he allegedly drank from and left at the scene of the crime. James Moorer, 20, was arrested and charged with burglary this week for allegedly breaking into a Chelsea apartment on Christmas Day 2009. He made off with a desktop computer, videos and cameras. Police arrested Moorer, who has several prior arrests, after matching his DNA to the national DNA database.

What he heard was a recording of a female voice telling him to dial a second number. "Hey there sexy guy," a female voice said when Nico called the second number. Authorities in Massachusetts have decided to stop going after a man who faced a criminal complaint for failing to appear for jury duty after learning he's been dead for five years. Officials, unaware he had died, continued to send letters about his failure to report. His family says they tried to tell authorities that he had died, but officials say the family never sent a death certificate.

Apartment complexes are resorting to using DNA testing on dog doo to find out who's not cleaning up after their pets. Manager Debbie Violette said she plans to use commercially available DNA sampling kits. "We've tried doing the warning letters. He claims to be an ordained minister and a member of the Hawaii Cannabis Ministry.

A California woman said her family's puppy was rescued from a sewer pipe thanks to a pair of Roto Rooter employees. Amelie Johnson of Stockton said the puppy crawled into a sewer drain that had been left uncapped by the county and went 12 feet to the neighbor's sewer. She said animal control employees told her they couldn't help with the situation and firefighters and San Joaquin County Public Works employees were unable to reach the dog with their equipment. Johnson said her mother-in-law suggested she call a plumber and a pair of Roto Rooter workers showed up with cables and a snake-line camera. "Once we were able to find the puppy, we could gently nudge it out with a cable machine we had put through the opposite side in the neighbor's yard," plumbing technician Anthony Soares said. The workers did not charge for the rescue.

Touching an endangered Hawaiian monk seal will cost a 19-year-old man $100. Cameron Cayaban pleaded guilty in federal court to harassing, harming or pursuing an endangered species. A federal magistrate judged imposed $100 in fines and fees. The government charged Cayaban with slapping a Hawaiian monk seal known as Kermit on March 12th at Kalaeloa's White Plains Beach while the animal was re-entering the ocean. His lawyer says Cayaban was overcome when he saw the seal, ran up to the endangered animal and touched it. Witnesses who saw what happened reported the incident to Barbers Point military police.

A Michigan boy is getting quite a jump on his learner's permit. Police in Caseville report a seven-year-old drove about 20 miles before stopping with the help of police. Police Chief Jamie Learman says the pint-sized driver said he wanted to go see his dad. The boy was staying with his mother, who was unaware that the youngster took the car for a spin. Learman and deputies managed to box in the car and eventually got it to stop.

Holder described her new husband as "a hopeless romantic."

A New York woman was arrested after stealing a license plate off a patrol car and shoving it down her pants. Police said Beryl Duncan, 53, took the plate from the marked 2009 Chevrolet Impala while it was parked near Prospect Park on a call about a disturbance about 1 a.m. Monday. A witness described seeing Duncan shove the plate down her pants and police said she denied stealing the plate when confronted by an officer. Police said the woman told the officer the plate had fallen off the vehicle and she was holding it until she could return it to an officer. Duncan was arrested and charged with criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.

A homeless man from Utah has discovered he is heir to a small fortune. Max Melitzer was tracked down by a private investigator over the weekend, and told that he had inherited a "significant" amount from his brother, who died of cancer last year. Melitzer has been homeless for the past few years, carrying his possessions in a shopping cart. But Private Eye David Lundberg said that he will now be able to live comfortably. "He'll no longer be living on the street or in abandoned storage sheds."

An escaped convict was caught following a day on the loose after he knocked on a cabin door only to find out the man renting the lodge was an off-duty guard at the prison he just escaped from. Authorities said 39-year-old James Edward Russell took off from the Washington State penitentiary Tuesday morning. Early the next day, Russell - still wearing his prison uniform - went to the cabin asking to use the phone. After a scuffle, Russell ran off, Lewis said. The guard reported the incident and Russell was caught a few hours later. He had been serving time for forgery and theft.

A Montana woman says an energy company has identified the cause of a brief power outage as "a deer with wings." Lee Bridges says she was outside with her dogs around the time of the power outage. A NorthWestern Energy truck pulled up, giving her a chance to ask the driver what caused the problem. She says he pointed up and said, "Apparently, we've got deer with wings." Bridges looked up and saw a dead fawn on a power line. Officials suspect an eagle may have picked up the dear after it had already died, but couldn't keep it from slipping out of its talons.

The head of the Portland Water Bureau said he decided to drain 7.8 million gallons of drinking water from an Oregon reservoir after a man urinated in it. David Shaff, administrator of the bureau, said he decided to have the water drained after security cameras recorded 21-year-old Joshua Seater urinating into the Mount Tabor reservoir, which supplies drinking water to much of Portland. "I had a pleasant buzz and I should have known better," Seater said. "It was a split second thing and as soon as I was done I was like, 'Oh man' and I saw the police officer show up I knew exactly what they're here for." Officials said the cleaning process is likely to take several days, but service to residents should not be affected. Seater could face misdemeanor charges and fines, police said.

People in China are eating with chopsticks made in Americus, Georgia. The Georgia Chopsticks Company is producing a million a day, with most being exported to China. Company president Jae Lee says Georgia has just the right kind of wood, poplar and sweet gum trees that grow like weeds. Lee hopes to up his production to 10 million a day when the plant can get enough workers. The chopsticks factory is an economic boost for the area, which has lost many jobs to foreign competition.

Minnesota's head of license plate censorship said letter combinations banned by the state include abbreviations for profanities and brand names. Tom Evans, supervisor of the state Department of Public Safety's special plate unit, said he and his team go through every possible three-letter combination every year to determine which plates need to be banned. Evans said each year brings the banning of new combinations that have been reported to the department as obscene, such as FYU and WTF. "Any time there is an 'F' in the box, we have to look really close," he said. "I would have never thought about WTF before." Evans said other potentially offensive combinations, such as KKK and LSD, are also banned.

An Ohio judge is recommending those visiting the new Franklin County Common Pleas Courthouse while wearing skirts take the elevator instead of the glass stairs. Judge Julie Lynch said those wearing skirts, dresses and kilts to the Columbus courthouse, which officially opened Monday, should avoid the glass stairs due to the busy walkway located directly underneath. Jim Goodenow, director of public facilities management, said security guards at the $105 million facility have been instructed to keep a lookout for potential skirt peepers, and officials will consider darkening the glass or taking other measures if it is found to be a problem.

An Oakland, California, man who had his laptop stolen launched his own search, using the tracking software he had installed on his MacBook. He began to get back images, including images of a man curled on a couch and one of the same man propped shirtless on his bed. Joshua Kaufman tried contacting the police, but they didn't help. So he began publishing the images on Twitter, and in a blog. Eventually, the media picked up on the story and the police came calling. They arrested a man in the theft and Kaufman got his laptop back last week.

A police officer in Independence, Missouri, who thought he was killing an alligator on the loose actually shot a life-size concrete lawn ornament. The police department ended up apologizing to Rick Sheridan, the cement gator's owner. Sheridan heard gunfire as he was working in his garage last weekend. When he went out to see what was going on, he discovered several police officers with their guns drawn. "The officer fired two rounds and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," Sheridan said. The police department said a man called to report his children had seen an alligator. The police department checked with state conservation officials and were told they should kill the animal if they could find it.

Police in Topeka, Kansas, said a shopper who discovered his car had been damaged by a shopping cart drove his vehicle through the doors of the store. Police said the man had been shopping at Dillons grocery store Monday and exited the store at about 9:30 p.m. to find a wind-blown shopping cart had damaged his car. According to investigators, the man apparently attempted to throw a shopping cart through a store window or glass door but was unsuccessful. He then drove his car through the doors of the store, causing "substantial damage" to the building.

Police in Bangor, Maine, say a man wanted for failing to pay fines accidentally helped officers find him when he repeatedly "pocket dialed" 911 while doing yard work. Police say 29-year-old James Green was using a backpack leaf blower Saturday when he kept calling 911 without realizing it. Officers were able to determine where the calls were coming from by triangulating the signal from Green's phone. There were two active warrants for Green's arrest for failure to pay fines.

A Pennsylvania woman will stand trial on charges she fed marijuana-laced margarine to a 12-year-old girl she was baby-sitting, along with two other children at her home. The 12-year-old's mother called police after discovering the drugs in a tub of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter in 22-year-old Stevie Hickey's freezer. The woman said Hickey spread the substance on two pieces of toast that he gave to the girl. Hickey allegedly told the girl it was "parsley butter," but later acknowledged to police that it was marijuana. Hickey remains free after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing on marijuana possession and child endangerment charges.

Police in Riverdale, Georgia, said they arrested a substitute teacher who allegedly urinated into a trash can while teaching a fourth-grade class. Coleman Eaton Jr., 60, was arrested Wednesday after the incident at Riverdale Elementary School. Students told police that Eaton told the class to turn around and not look, but a couple of students said they did. Eaton was charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation and was taken to jail without bond. Eaton has not admitted to the offense but police did find urine in the trash can.

Police said a University of Iowa student was arrested after trying to "lighten up" a graduation ceremony by throwing toilet paper into the crowd. Investigators said Robert Koehler, 22, who was not graduating, was arrested after tossing toilet paper into the crowd of students during the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts commencement ceremony Saturday. He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.

A Niles, Illinois, man said someone posing as a doctor used toothpicks for acupuncture and gave him expired medication. Police said the man responded to an ad in a Bulgarian-language newspaper on April 23rd and met with the man claiming to be a doctor at a closed medical clinic. The victim told police the man used toothpicks to give him acupuncture on his chest and gave him pills labeled "Prosperous Farmer Dietary Supplements," which had expired in February 2002.

A Pennsylvania man has survived a lightning strike while helping set up tents for a Boy Scout outing. Police in the town of Industry say the 49-year-old man was standing by a tree when he was struck by a bolt of lightning on Saturday. The man and others were moving scouts and camping supplies off the site as a thunderstorm approached. No children were nearby when the man was juiced up. He was up and walking around when police arrived, though he was treated later at a hospital for a wound where the lightning bolt apparently exited his body.

Officers said Scott Wellington told his bosses at C&M Machine that his wife was seriously ill with cancer. C&M Machine donated $7,000 to help Wellington cover her medical expenses. Wellington later told his employers that his wife had died. Officials said Wellington's wife didn't know about the plan until she received a sympathy card from the company. Mrs. Wellington called the company and let them know that she was still alive. The company then called police. Mr. Wellington was being held in lieu of $2,500 bail. He's scheduled to be arraigned today.

An honest Texas teenager who thought she had lost out on $2,000 in unclaimed cash she turned in was given double that amount by an anonymous donor. Shepton High School freshman Ashley Donaldson had come across the money in the parking lot at Pavillion Center in Dallas in February. Despite her family's financial straits, she turned it in, thinking the money would become hers if no one claimed it. But Dallas officials changed city policy and tossed the $2,000 in its general fund after it went unclaimed. WFAA-TV, Dallas, aired a story Wednesday on the honest teen's unfortunate turn of events, and within hours a mystery benefactor from Fort Worth stepped in and gave her and her family $4,000. Donaldson, her four siblings and parents had moved from Colorado to Texas last November and until two weeks ago were living in a one-bedroom apartment.

Authorities in New York say a 21-year-old man who jumped into the Hudson River to escape police got all wet for nothing. The man was riding in a car Wednesday afternoon when it was pulled over by police in Rensselaer, across the Hudson River from Albany. Police say he bolted from the car's passenger side and ran toward the river, where he jumped in near a bridge. The current carried him about 250 feet down river before he was able to grab onto a branch. Police finally managed to pull him from the 50-degree water. Authorities say the man thought there was a warrant out for his arrest. There wasn't. The man was taken to a hospital for an examination.

Police in DeKalb County, Georgia, are looking for the crooks who broke into 36 police cars. The official vehicles were in the county's maintenance yard. A worker found the trunks open, windows smashed and locks popped. Police say some of their radios, a police jacket, a laptop, a GPS unit and a camera are missing. Authorities don't know how the thieves got into the secured lot, which is also patrolled by private security guards.

The Indiana Secretary of State's office said the number given for the Hoosier Voter Hotline in Monday's news release was the incorrect number and caused callers to be connected with a recording telling them to dial a second number for "fun, stimulating conversation." A man on a scooter in Surprise, Arizona, was arrested after asking a police officer a simple question. David Williams, 23, rode up to an officer around 7 a.m. last week in front of a convenience store and reportedly asked if the officer had ever arrested him before. The officer told Williams that he didn't think he had arrested him but ran his name through communications to check. The officer was notified that Williams had a valid warrant for his arrest out of Pinetop, Arizona, on suspicion of assault with a weapon. Williams was then arrested.

Police in Hallandale, Florida, said two deaf men were stabbed at the Ocean's Eleven Sports Lounge and Grill Saturday night when another patron thought the men were throwing gang signs at her. The men were using sign language. They were at the bar to celebrate a birthday. When 45-year-old Barbara Lee confronted the men, they motioned for her to go away. She left the bar but returned with 19-year-old Marco Ibanez, who is accused of pulling out a knife and stabbing the men. The two victims and a bouncer who were injured in the ruckus were taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Lee and Ibanez remain behind bars.
